Safi is a small beautiful city situated on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, and It’s the closer place from Africa to America.
It’s very much ancient but still alive and charming, nobody sure about the first tribes and civilizations who were living in Safi, because there is not enough historical texts about this city and its origins, It was frequented by the Romans, and it appeared in the Arab texts under the name of Asfi, and that’s how It’s called in Moroccan dialect.
It’s the Moroccan city which is famous by ceramics, and who talks about Safi, should talks about pottery, because it’s the most important traditional profession here in the city, and it’s a cultural and touristic heritage, there are over two thousand person in Safi work during the whole year on ceramics, “hadabat al hirafiyin” (the hill of ceramicists), or “alqarya” annamoudajiya (the model village) in “Sidi Abderrahman”, these are places that you should visit, because there you will have the opportunity to walk around and look at people working on their ceramics, and why not take with you a small souvenir from Safi.
In Safi you can enjoy the beach and the surfers can take one of the best left waves, not only in Morocco, but in all Africa.
After making sport and feel little hungry, don’t forget to taste fish of Safi, and especially sardine, because you are in the biggest port in Morocco, kwirat(balls) , mashwi(cooked on natural fire), or maqli(fried), in all its kind, it’s so delicious and tasty.
There’s a place in Safi I used to go to, called “Kournish”, it’s outside the city, and looks like a mountain face to the ocean.
It’s really rare to find something like that in the nature, and what makes it more special is that you can enjoy watching the ocean while you are walking or shopping, and there are some traditional restaurants specialized in fish food.
You can enjoy the amazing sunset, while playing music or just talking and relaxing, letting the natural harmony to take you to the place your mind wants to go, the waves and the sounds of high and low tide, the wind, and the birds that are flying and singing around.
The most special is the trace of the sunlight on the ocean before the sun swims inside it; its light is making a road on the ocean and you feel you can follow the sun through this road.
If you want to come to Safi from Essaouira through the coast road, it’s around 129 kilometers, and when you are almost arrived, there’s still only around 20 kilometers before you enter the city, you’ll smell something strange, then you will find yourself looking at one of the important industrial complexes of phosphate transformation since the 60′s until now. Please Don’t let that make you turn around and come back without visiting this wonderful city.
If you want to come to Safi from El jadida through the coast road, it’s around 157 kilometers, and there are many wonderful beaches where you can take rest or stop for a while for enjoying it, the beaches are : Sidi bouzid, Oualidia , cap beddouza, lalla fatna, Sidi boudala, and when you arrive to Safi, you will find yourself entering the city from one of the most beautiful sides, a high place from where you can see the whole coast of the city, with the beach, the port and buildings.
For spending the night in Safi, I suggest you either the camping where you can stay Beginning from 70 dirham per night for two persons, or for more comfort there’s Hotel Atlantic Beginning from 300 dirham per night for couple.
